I have a problem. I can’t communicate with my grandparents because they only speak Chinese, while I have the Chinese vocabulary of a 3-year-old. Why didn’t I try harder in Chinese school? Why haven’t I made it a priority to learn Chinese before my grandparents die? And why haven’t they tried to get to know me better? Do other children of immigrants deal with the same problem?
This is my quest for answers and my attempt to have my first real conversation with my grandparents, before it’s too late. It was also my first time performing a radio story live, at the 2014 First Person Arts Festival.
